Last we saw of The String Contingent, they’d just performed at one of our very first Folk at the Old Folks shows in 2015, at least we think it was 2015. It was a long time ago. They’ve returned to New Zealand for this first time since then, to grace the stages of the Wellington Folk Festival, and they’re doing a small tour around that.
This chamber-folk trio from Australia and Scotland have a unique sound that walks the delicate line between folk, classical, jazz and bluegrass. Australians, Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass), with Scotsman Graham McLeod (guitar) have made five albums and toured many thousands of kilometres together, performing at festivals and concert venues in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Scandinavia. They have just taken the road less travelled along the Savannah Way from Cairns (QLD) to Broome (WA) to deepen their experience of Australia and form the basis of their next major project.
They’ll be at Cafe One2one this Wednesday 17th Octoberperforming music from their latest album ‘Iterations’ and older favourites, plus sharing stories and new material from their trip across ‘The Top’.
