Sophie Mashlan has today released her highly-anticipated debut single ‘Let You Down’ – the first single from her upcoming first full-length album.
“‘Let You Down’ is an abstract representation of my feelings on a failed relationship,” says 19-year-old Sophie. “I feel like it represents the way I write about things – metaphorically and without focusing on musical conventions, rather basing the sound on instinct and passion,” she adds.
Alongside the other songs on Sophie’s upcoming debut album, ‘Let You Down’ was recorded in Lyttelton with the legendary Ben Edwards, who is one of the country’s most sought-after producers, thanks to his work with the likes of Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid, Delaney Davidson and Tami Neilson.
“It was a pretty amazing experience. I was so absorbed in the music for those weeks and Ben is just incredible. All the songs are solely written by me, and I’ve always had such strong notions of what I imagine for instrumentation, but Ben was able to provide a bit of influence – something I don’t get often as a (slightly reclusive) solo writer. We were able to create a record, which this song is the first single from, that I feel super proud of and am excited to share,” says Sophie.
